Celebrating 100 Years of Conservation and Community: MFGA's Centennial Journey
As we step into 2024, we are proud to celebrate a monumental milestone—the centennial of the Moncton Fish and Game Association (MFGA). Since receiving our charter from the Government of New Brunswick in 1924, we have been dedicated to being exemplary stewards of our province's natural habitats. Our commitment to conservation, education, and the promotion of responsible outdoor activities has shaped our legacy and will continue to guide us into the future.
Leading the Way in Environmental Responsibility
In the 2023/2024 period, MFGA has taken a strong stand on an important environmental issue: the reduction of lead usage in fishing and hunting. With well-documented evidence of the harmful effects of lead on both humans and wildlife, our members supported a resolution at the New Brunswick Wildlife Federation (NBWF) AGM, advocating for a voluntary reduction in lead use when safer, cost-effective alternatives are available. As environmental awareness grows, we believe it is crucial to be proactive rather than reactive, aligning with our constitution's commitment to wildlife conservation and preservation.
Partnering for Wildlife Rehabilitation
Our dedication to wildlife conservation was further highlighted through our collaboration with the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (CWRC). Specializing in the rehabilitation of sick and injured wildlife, CWRC is a leader in the region, particularly in the study of eagle populations affected by lead ingestion. To support their vital work, MFGA provided funding for their research efforts. We're excited to share that our "foster" eagle, Codiac, is expected to be released later this summer, marking a significant achievement in her recovery.
Empowering Women in Shooting Sports
Our MFGA Ladies Range Day continues to be a resounding success. This annual event, now in its third year, introduces new women shooters to the sport in a supportive and educational environment. With expert instruction in both handgun and rifle shooting, and a lunch break featuring food and beverages provided by MFGA and our sponsors, this event helps demystify firearms and promotes safe, enjoyable participation in shooting sports for everyone.
Preparing for the Next Century of Leadership
As we prepare for the next century of MFGA, we're making some important changes to ensure strong leadership for the future. In December 2024, we will align our board elections with provincial standards, moving the vote from late winter to December. This adjustment will allow our newly elected board to hit the ground running in the new year, providing a fresh start and encouraging greater participation from our members.
Enhancing Our Facilities for Members
Over the past year, we've made several improvements to our facilities to enhance the experience for our members. From updated target holders and new shooting benches to improved drainage systems and upgrades to our outbuildings, we're committed to maintaining and improving our ranges as our membership continues to grow. We have even more plans on the horizon, including additional berm work and clearing brush to maximize safety and usability.
Engaging and Informative Guest Speakers
Our meetings in 2023/2024 featured a diverse lineup of guest speakers, offering our members a wealth of knowledge on various topics. Highlights included insights from former Minister of Natural Resources and Energy Development Mike Holland, wildlife rehabilitation expert Dr. Jessica Rock from CWRC, Moncton Gun Club representative Kent Robinson, Petitcodiac Watershed Alliance reps Antony Theriault and Shane Boyd, Tri-County Search and Rescue, Carole Leblanc from Argus Audiology, Nature Conservancy of Canada rep Jordan Myles, even our own Hugh O’Neill for a basic discussion on handgun techniques and many more. These sessions provided valuable information and fostered a greater understanding of the issues and opportunities within our community.
As we embark on our next century, the Moncton Fish and Game Association remains committed to the principles of conservation, education, and responsible outdoor recreation. We look forward to continuing our journey together, guided by our constitution and the collective will of our membership.
Here's to another 100 years of stewardship, community, and passion for the great outdoors!
